Computers/Ms.Leeshock:
In computer class we are not simply learning internet safety, how to type, format, and do research. This year's annual Iditarod Race is now taking place in Alaska. It began on Sunday, March 7th and runs for about 8 days. The students learned about the mushers and their teams. They know what the dogs and mushers eat and carry on their sled. They know there are currently 72 racing teams, each made up of 16 huskies, that will pull the sled, traveling 45 mph over 1,100 miles. They start in Anchorage and finish in Nome, AK. In class, the second and third graders were able to select teams they would like to see finish in the top ten. They learned some interesting facts about the race, climate, clothing, dogs and history. You can find all this information and follow the race using the links on my technology webpage.
Second Grade:
Mrs. Stokesbury's second grade class has been studying the pond habitat as it's first science unit. With Mrs. Leeshock's help and expertise, the second graders took a walking fieldtrip to observe animals and plants found at the Haworth pond, and made comparisons to the pond at the Haworth School. The class also conducted an experiment called "Yucky Water" in which the students observed the effects of pollutants on pond plants.
Fourth Grade:
As part of the technology curriculum, the 4th grade has worked at formatting Word documents. As an extension of the Lab work, they have created ABC books on a variety of topics, such as foods, countries, and cartoon characters. The culminating activity will be a visit by the 4th grade students to the Kindergarten classes to share the ABC books with their younger friends. Afterward, the 4th graders will present the ABC books to the Kindergarten teachers as additions for their classroom libraries. The activity has generated great excitement at both grade levels and the 4th graders can't wait to show their projects.
Enrichment:
In Enrichment grades 1 and 2 are traveling the globe learning about continents, countries, cities, culture and landmarks. Grade 3 is doing a read though of Midsummer's Night by Shakespeare for the lower grades. Grade 6 explored Greek Myths and will soon create the school of the future.
G.A.T.E is doing some amazing charity work. One student in grade 4 is selling
beautiful tie dye shirts, which she made, for breast cancer research. There are many more great charity events coming from the students who are showing great care towards others.
Grade 5 and 6 is going to Dwight- Englewood to meet with 200 students and solve global problems. Grade 6 and 7 will do the restaurant project, created by the Foundation for Free Enterprise. They will learn to be entrepreneurs.
Grade 8 has finished some amazing projects which include books, music, giving, creating films and power points on global warming, oceans and how to achieve great health as a child. Their rotation will finish in spring with a trip to the 76 House to learn about American history.
Mrs. Wimer's Science classes:
The 8th graders completed their physical science unit with roller coasters. Many thanks to the teachers that came in to see them in action and voted for the best designs, name or use of materials.
The 7th graders are busy creating original episodes for Sponge Bob. They are
incorporating their new knowledge of the animal kingdoms to make scientific episodes.
Stop by and see some of the characters they have already created and are on display in front of the little lab.
The 6th graders completed the Quake and Shake project. Teams consisting of an
architect, foreperson, accountant, and buyer planned and constructed an earthquake
"proof" building. The buildings were later shook and two of them were held up to a
magnitude 10
