Each year, it is my tradition to read The Ballad of the Republic Sung in the Year 1888, Casey at the Bat, otherwise known as Casey at the Bat, by Ernest Lawrence Thayer during the first week of April to acknowledge opening day of baseball and National Poetry Month. (By the way, April is also National School Library month.) This year, I asked my students in grades 3 and up to attempt to write a diamante about baseball. A diamante is a seven line poem that is shaped like a diamond (how appropriate for our baseball theme!). The first and seventh line contain one word that contrast each other; the second and the sixth contain two words describing the line closest to them; the third and fifth contain action words and the fourth line contains four words, two describing line one and two describing line seven.
