ABSENCE/LATENESS

Parents are requested to call the school no later than 8:30 a.m. in the event their child(ren) will be absent or late.

An answering machine will be operating 24 hours each day – including weekends.  Therefore, if your child is ill during the night, rather than waiting until the morning to call the school, you may call in any time and leave the message.  The number to call to report absence and lateness is 201-384-5526, ext. 117 (school nurse).

The school will continue to telephone the home of any student who is not present or accounted for by a note or phone message at approximately 9:05 AM and 1:00 PM.

If possible, parents are requested to send a note to the homeroom teacher, who will forward it to the attendance officer, prior to the day(s) or absence(s) for non-illness absences.

Notes from parents/guardians should be brought to the homeroom teacher the first day upon return from an absence – even though the absence has been reported.  The same procedure should be followed for lateness.  Students arriving late should report to the main office BEFORE GOING TO THEIR HOMEROOM – OR JOINING THEIR CLASS – AFTER THE HOMEROOM PERIOD.

FORMAL INTERVENTION PROCEDURES FOR STUDENTS
WHO MAY BE UNDER THE INFLUENCE
TO BE FOLLOWED IN ACCORDANACE WITH N.J. S. 18A:40A-12(a) et. seq.

The Haworth Board of Education recognizes that the misuse of drugs, alcohol and tobacco is a serious problem with legal, physical and social implications for the entire community.  The role of the school is to strive to prevent drug abuse and help drug abusers by educational rather than punitive means.

Whenever it shall appear to a staff member that a student may be under the influence of substances, the staff member is to report the matter as soon as possible to the school nurse or medical inspector and to the Superintendent/Principal.  The Superintendent/Principal shall immediately notify the parent and shall arrange for an immediate examination by a doctor selected by the parent or if that doctor is not immediately available, by the medical inspector if he/she is available, or the pupil shall be taken to the emergency room of a nearest hospital accompanied by a member of the school staff.

A written report within 24 hours must be given to the parent and Superintendent/Principal.  If it is determined that the pupil was under the influence and returned home, that pupil shall not resume attendance until he/she submits a written report certifying that the student is physically and mentally able to return thereto.  In addition, the pupil shall be interviewed by a substance abuse coordinator for determining the extent of involvement.

Sec. 794).  Mrs. Christina Sasson, our Guidance Counselor, is the 504 Officer for the Haworth School.

PROJECT CHILD FIND

For information regarding early intervention special education programs for pre-school Haworth resident children determined eligible for special education services, please contact Mrs. Bonni F. Ehrhardt, Child Study Team Chairperson, Haworth Public School, 205 Valley Road, Haworth, New Jersey 07641.
