Conclusion
Mrs. Doyle and Mrs. Kahn hope that you have learned that it took incredible planning as well as courage and bravery to make the Underground Railroad work. It isn't easy to stand up and do the right thing or fight for what you believe.
Slaves stood to lose the most. They were kept ignorant and frightened and severely punished for any transgression. Change is difficult in the best of circumstances, let alone when one is illiterate, penniless, frightened and hungry.
Conductors, especially in the south, recognized that the institution of slavery violated basic human rights and worked against the status quo. They provided food, clothing and encouragement to fellow human beings during a time of dire need.
We hope that you have also learned a bit more about our town of Haworth, what its landmarks are, the areas of potential dangers and areas of potential refuge. And finally we hope that you have asked yourself the question:
What would I have done for the Abolitionist Movement?
