Learning Goals and Objectives
The student will:
~familiarize himself or herself with the quilt codes that were sewn into show ways (quilts) that were used to help slaves escape during the 1800's.
~reinforce knowledge of the quilt codes by creating his or her own "code book."
~demonstrate understanding by choosing codes to use in a quilt of the student's creation and explaining why the codes were chosen.
~familiarize himself or herself with the routes that conductors on the Underground Railroad took to help escaping slaves and choose a crossroad that would be the next logical step from Haworth, NJ.
~calculate the number of miles to that crossroad and signify the number within his or her quilt.
~explain why he or she chose the crossroad and how he or she showed this.
~demonstrate familiarity with landmarks of Haworth, NJ and important map features by drawing a map of the town to include in the show way.
~practice writing skills by explaining why various codes were chosen.
~practice oral presentation skills by sharing the quilt with the class.
